Hordeum caespitosum Scribner,H. jubatum L., andH. lechleri (Steudel)Schenck are very similar in appearance and therefore until recently were mostly not recognized as separate entities. The first two are tetraploid and natives to North America, but the second occurs naturally in eastern Siberia and has been introduced in Europe and South America and may become a cosmopolitan weed. The third is hexaploid and South American. This study analyses their morphological diversity by means of selected multivariate techniques in order to determine if there is justification to recognize them as three separate morphological species. Logistic discrimination, although based on a reduced set of characters, yielded the highest percent of correct assignments. A linear discriminant function is provided and validated by 100 bootstrap repeats. Canonical discriminant analysis indicated three groups. It is subsequently concluded that the three are separate morphological species. Although a linear discriminant function is given, a traditional identification key is provided based on the palea length and triad (the group of three spikelets at each rachis node) length.  相似文献

Clofentezine resistance in T. urticae was first confirmed in Australia in 1987 after Queensland glasshouse roses had been exposed to 40 applications of clofentezine over a 10 month period. Clofentezine resistance in this strain was extremely high (>2.500x) and conferred high level cross-resistance to the chemically unrelated compound hexythiazox. Clofentezine resistance in T. urticae was detected in pome fruit orchards in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria in 1988 and caused field control failure after 5–6 sprays. Resistance was subsequently detected in Adelaide during 1988 and the Bathurst Orange region, NSW in 1989. Clofentezine and hexythiazox resistance appears particularly stable making it difficult to manage.This work contributes in part for the fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of PhD. at the University of Sydney.  相似文献

Most flowering plant species are hermaphroditic, but a small number of species in most plant families are unisexual (i.e., an individ-ual will produce only male or female gametes). Because species with unisexual flowers have evolved repeatedly from hermaphroditic progenitors, the mechanisms controlling sex determination in flowering plants are extremely diverse. Sex is most strongly determined by genotype in all species but the mechanisms range from a single controlling locus to sex chromosomes bearing several linked locirequired for sex determination. Plant hormones also influence sex expression with variable effects from species to species. Here, we review the genetic control of sex determination from a number of plant species to illustrate the variety of extant mechanisms. We emphasize species that are now used as models to investigate the molecular biology of sex determination. We also present our own investigations of the structure of plant sex chromosomes of white campion (Silene latifolia - Melan-drium album). The cytogenetic basis of sex determination in white campion is similar to mammals in that it has a male-specific Y-chromosome that carries dominant male determining genes. If one copy of this chromosome is in the genome, the plant is male. Otherwise it is female. Like mammalian Y-chromosomes, the white campion Y-chromosome is rich in repetitive DNA. We isolated repetitive sequences from microdissected Y-chromosomes of white campion to study the distribution of homologous repeated sequences on the Y-chromosome and the other chromosomes. We found the Y to be especially rich in repetitive sequences that were generally dispersed over all the white campion chromosomes. Despite its repetitive character, the Y-chromosome is mainly euchromatic. This may be due to the relatively recent evolution of the white campion sex chromosomes compared to the sex chromosomes of animals. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease causing attacks of fever and serositis. The FMF gene (designated “MEF”) is on 16p, with the gene order 16cen–D16S80–MEF–D16S94–D16S283–D16S291–16pter. Here we report the association of FMF susceptibility with alleles at D16S94, D16S283, and D16S291 among 31 non-Ashkenazi Jewish families (14 Moroccan, 17 non-Moroccan). We observed highly significant associations at D16S283 and D16S291 among the Moroccan families. For the non-Moroccans, only the allelic association at D16S94 approached statistical significance. Haplotype analysis showed that 18/25 Moroccan FMF chromosomes, versus 0/21 noncarrier chromosomes, bore a specific haplotype for D16S94–D16S283–D16S291. Among non-Moroccans this haplotype was present in 6/26 FMF chromosomes versus 1/28 controls. Both groups of families are largely descended from Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition. The strong haplotype association seen among the Moroccans is most likely a founder effect, given the recent origin and genetic isolation of the Moroccan Jewish community. The lower haplotype frequency among non-Moroccan carriers may reflect differences both in history and in population genetics.  相似文献

The glycosphingolipid, galactosyl ceramide (GalCer), was studied by 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in fluid phospholipid bilayer membranes, with regard to arrangement of its acyl chain. For this purpose, species with perdeuterated 18-carbon fatty acid (18:0[d35]GalCer) or with perdeuterated 24-carbon fatty acid (24:0[d47] GalCer) were dispersed in bilayers of the 18-carbon phospholipid, 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine (SOPC). For 18:0[d35] GalCer, smoothed profiles of the order parameter, SCD, were found to be very similar to one another over the range of glycolipid concentration, 5-40 mol%. In addition, they were very similar to orientational order parameter profiles well known from the literature on phospholipid and glycolipid acyl chains (which deals in general with membranes of homogeneous chain length in the range 14-18 carbons). Corresponding order parameter profiles for the long-chain species, 24:0[d47] GalCer, were also similar to one another for glycolipid concentrations between 5 and 40 mol%. Their shapes, however, were distinctly different from those of the shorter chain analogues. SCD profiles for the two species were quantitatively similar to a membrane depth of C15. SCD values at C16 and C17 were approximately 20 and 30%, respectively, higher for the long-chain glycosphingolipid than for its short-chain analogue in SOPC. Nitroxide spin labels attached rigidly to C16 of the long-chain glycolipid in SOPC gave electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) order parameters that were twice as high as for a spin label at C16 on the shorter chain glycolipid. Comparison was made between spectra of 24:0[d47] GalCer in SOPC and fully hydrated bilayers of the pure 24:0[d47] GalCer, a system that is considered to be partially interdigitated in fluid and gel phases. The resultant 2H NMR order parameter profiles displayed similar features, indicating that related organizational properties exist in these fluid systems. Effective chain length of 24:0[d47] GalCer within the SOPC membrane was calculated using the method of Schindler and Seelig (1975. Biochemistry, 14:2283-2287). The result suggested that the long-chain fatty acid should protrude roughly one third of the host matrix chain length across the bilayer midplane. However, a treatment of the same order parameters making very few assumptions about chain conformation indicated a high degree of orientational flexibility for the "extra" length of the long chain fatty acid.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

In many species, the order in which males mate with a female explains much of the variation in paternity arising from post-copulatory sexual selection. Research in Drosophila suggests that mating order may account for the majority of the variance in male reproductive success. However, the effects of mating order on paternity bias might not be static but could potentially vary with social or environmental factors. To test this idea, we used an existing dataset, collated from an experiment we previously published (Morimoto et al., PLoS One, 11, 2016, e0154468), with the addition of unpublished data from the same experiment. These previous experiments manipulated larval density in Drosophila melanogaster which generated variation in male and female body size, assembled groups of individuals of different sizes, and measured the mating success and paternity share of focal males. The data presented here provides information on each focal male's mating order and the frequency in which focal males remated with same females (‘repetitive matings’). We combined this information with our previously reported focal male reproductive success to partition variance in paternity into male mating order and repetitive matings across groups that differed in the body size composition of males and females. We found, as expected, that male mating order explained a considerable portion of the variance in male paternity. However, we also found that the impact of male mating order on male paternity was influenced by the body size composition of groups. Specifically, males that tended to mate last had a greater paternity advantage, and displayed lower variance, in groups containing a heterogenous mixture male body sizes than in groups with a single male body size. Repetitive mating only had a minor contribution to the variance in male paternity share across all experiments. Overall, our findings contribute to the growing body of research showing that post-copulatory sexual selection is subject to socio-ecological influences.  相似文献

Abstract Two different nucleic acid precursor utilization patterns were obtained for five avian isolates of Chlamydia psittaci . Three of the isolates bahaved in a manner similar to that previously described, showing total dependency on the host cell for ribonucleoside triphosphates and being unable to utilize medium-supplied thymidine. In contrast, the other two isolates were incapable of taking pyrimidine ribonucleotides from the host cell and they could efficiently utilize medium-supplied thymidine. These unusual isolates were resistant to 5-fluorouridine while the other three isolates were sensitive. Of the five isolates only 6BC was sensitive to sulfonamides. The five isolates were divided into two groups by comparing the Alu I restriction endonuclease patterns obtained following digestion of the major outer membrane protein (OMP1) gene, amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. The OMP1 genotyping results were confirmed by serotyping.  相似文献
